Teaching Moment {#Reverb11}

Prompt:  Teaching Moment

Sometimes we find teachers in the most unexpected places.  Who surprised you as a teacher this year and what did you learn?

I most definitely found a teacher in the unlikeliest of places this year . . . . . within me!

I would visit my favorite blogs and marvel at the images I saw there.  I knew I wanted to improve the quality of my own photos and it was these daily visits that eventually inspired me to get off my butt and try to do something about it.

Early in the year I treated myself to a new camera and then taught myself how to use it by reading the manual for the first time ever!  I read about Aperture/F-Stop Numbers and finally figured out what they meant.  It was a little scary at first but I took my camera off the auto setting, experimented with different settings and haven't looked back since.  Then I bought a macro lens and fell in love with a whole new world that opened up before my very eyes.

I still have a long way to go with my photography skills but I'm amazed at what I learnt this year and how much I improved . . . . .  all by being inspired and having the desire and the passion to try and figure things out.

Who surprised you as a teacher this year?

  1. Kathryn - I didn't realize that your serious foray into photography just happened this year! I am greatly impressed with the progress that you have made and doubly impressed that you have been your own teacher on this journey. Kudos to you for the courage to take it off auto!

  3. Yep it was just a little over a year ago that I went off auto mode too! And it took me a while to get the whole aperature, etc. thing until I read Bryan Peterson's book, Understanding Exposure! Oh, that's what those little lines are for when I look through the eye piece! haha

    Like you I feel like I have a long way to go, but it feels good to turn and look back and see a bit of distance traveled.

    Oh, it's so late - I'll have to catch up on your other posts tomorrow!! : )

  4. I just came across your blog, but I wanted to say that your photography is gorgeous... even the bugs and I have a severe phobia of them. Thank you for posting such beautiful art work.

  7. This macro shot is stunning...the eyes look so interesting. How on earth did you get a fly to sit still long enough to photograph?!
