Disturbing Dreams

Ever have those dark disturbing dreams that leave you feeling out of sorts and a little on edge?  The last few nights I've repeatedly dreamt about our cat Connor and it's beginning to freak me out.

In the first dream I found myself in my grandmothers house (who's no longer with us).  She'd left all the doors wide open and hundreds of white cats from all over the neighborhood had come into the house.  I was running from room to room searching like crazy for Connor (our white cat) amongst them.

The second dream was more disturbing and left me feeling angry, sad and confused.  I was walking along the street and passed a white cat that looked remarkably like Connor.  As I did so this woman struck a match and set light to his fur.  I was desperately trying to put out the flames without hurting him but his fur went up so fast that he was down to burnt skin in seconds.  I woke up feeling nauseated by the cruelty.

In the third dream I was investigating a flood in our basement when a man appeared with a somber look on his face.  He told me that Connor had died suddenly of a heart attack at which point I woke up in a cold sweat.

I have to wonder what it all means.

  1. How old is Connor? Have you been worried about him lately? Sometimes our dreams are manifestations of our subconscious thoughts and feelings. I have some pretty bizarre dreams myself, and it freaks me out when it involves a loved one or pet.

  2. My therapist tells me that dreams are not an exact story of what's going on, but more a way of emptying out thoughts often in a metaphor kind of way. Who knows? Dreams are so mysterious.
I love these collages that you've created. They are full of the angst you describe and I feel I could look at them over again and see different things. Very cool. Hope you and Connor sleep peacefully tonight.

  3. Often dreams that scare us because we think they might be premonitions, are actually dreams manifesting our fears.

On a deeper level, animals in our dreams often represent our passions and wilder instincts - you could try looking at your dreams in the light and see if you discover anything that resonates for you.

  4. Wow, those are really compelling images and I can feel your fear and angst. I wake up sometimes with the strangest dreams and sometimes I will write them down, otherwise by morning I can't remember the details. I sure hope you get some better sleep...

  5. After one of our cats ran away (long time ago) I kept having some very scary dreams about it.

Must be something you are concerned about regarding Connor.

  6. How very frightening to have such vivid dreams about such a scary subject. I liked Susan's thoughts about what these dreams could mean - metaphors for something else that is going on inside? You certainly found a creative way to express your fears through your images.

  7. I think our dreams are just a way of working out subconscious thoughts .... inner turmoils or whatever. But I love these images you used to describe your dreams. Awesome.

  10. I hate dreams like that. They color the entire day...trying to make sense of the insensible. Hope you've had some 'happier' dreams to overshadow these darker ones.
