Feeding Frenzy

There's been quite the feeding frenzy going on in our back yard this past week and I couldn't be happier.  As well as the regulars (squirrels and doves) there have been carolina wrens, chickadees, tufted titmouse, nuthatch, downy woodpeckers, blue jays, pilated woodpeckers, finches and junkos.

I had to smile when I saw this finch.

She noticed that she had a piece of thistle seed stuck to her feathers.

It was so cool to watch her retrieve it with her beak . . . . .

. . . . . and then proceed to eat it.

This Carolina Wren had quite the set of lungs.  For such a small bird they sure sing a big song!

  1. Great series Kathryn. I'm not a real fan of birds, but your images, so close up, cause me to re-think that. The first and last are my favorite, but really they are all so well done.

  2. Amazing shots, Kathryn! The details you have captured are quite sutnning. My favorite is the last one - the range of colors in the feathers and what seems to be an expression of patience is quite capivating.

  5. I'm whistling dixie, well not really cause I can't whistle worth a darn, but my heart is - so jealous, I wish my backyard was filled with these sweet birds! What incredible images and light you captured Kathryn, what a treat!! (insert a little heart here) ; )

  6. These are fantastic Kathryn! We have the same birds too. It has been so warm this winter that, in addition to many spring flowers blooming in our yard, the birds are singing like crazy. You are right, the little wren has the brightest song of them all.

  12. Nice job capturing their personalities. We have mostly common sparrows are our feeders this winter so it's nice to see something a little more "exotic".
