Feeding Frenzy

There's been quite the feeding frenzy going on in our back yard this past week and I couldn't be happier. As well as the regulars (squirrels and doves) there have been carolina wrens, chickadees, tufted titmouse, nuthatch, downy woodpeckers, blue jays, pilated woodpeckers, finches and junkos.

I had to smile when I saw this finch.

She noticed that she had a piece of thistle seed stuck to her feathers.

It was so cool to watch her retrieve it with her beak . . . . .

. . . . . and then proceed to eat it.

This Carolina Wren had quite the set of lungs. For such a small bird they sure sing a big song!

A blanket of fog envelopes me. I feel the weight of it despite its lightness. Always grey, always somber, as though in mourning. It appears desperate, clingy and sad as though not wanting to suffer alone.

As the sun reaches out to console it, it makes a hasty retreat and finds a new dark, damp corner in which to dwell.

Old Man Winter

Old Man Winter gave us a twirl of his cloak this weekend and left behind a blanket of crisp white snow.

While I chose to stay nice and warm inside a group of deer were outside foraging.

The young buck looked so beautiful. I'm sure he's going to be a stunner when he gets older.

It's extremely icy and foggy here this morning. Not quite the Monday I was hoping for, especially as I have to venture out.

Water Nymphs

I've been reading fairy tales lately, some familiar tales from childhood . . . others completely new to me. They make me smile. Wasn't childhood fun? The places that your imagination would take you to.

I was out on a walk recently and as I looked at this shot through my lens it was like a doorway opened and I was I was able to see with a child's eye . . . can you see them, the water nymphs laughing and dancing right there on the water?

Camera Shy

The downy woodpeckers have never really been interested in the bird seed I've put out . . . . .

. . . . . but they are loving the suet blocks I recently added.

They are a little camera shy though so it's been really difficult to get photos of them.

Jack Frost

It would seem as though Jack Frost has been running around the countryside turning puddles to ice. I can almost sense his mischievousness.

As a child the thought of Jack Frost used to scare the bejeebees out of me.

If truth be told a chill still runs up my spine when I see ice crystals forming on a window pane.

Below is a poem I wrote about my childhood memory of Jack . . . . .

During childhood you were scared half to death

Especially on the nights where you saw your own breath

For Jack Frost would be lurking under the bed

And you wished you were somewhere else instead

As long as you stayed put you knew you were okay

But you’d need the loo and you’d feel like you were prey

As you’d muster all your courage and leap off the bed

All the while horrendous thoughts going through your head

Your pulse racing, your heart missed a beat

You made it to the toilet where you’d sit with your feet

As high as you could get them up in the air

For logic told you that he couldn’t reach them there

It’s funny to look back with an adult’s eye

But the fear you felt then, no-one can deny

It's hard to believe that Valentines Day is creeping up on us fast, especially when it feels as though Christmas was just yesterday. It's been a while since I shared any artwork so I thought I'd give you a sneek peek at something I've been working on recently.

Disturbing Dreams

Ever have those dark disturbing dreams that leave you feeling out of sorts and a little on edge? The last few nights I've repeatedly dreamt about our cat Connor and it's beginning to freak me out.

In the first dream I found myself in my grandmothers house (who's no longer with us). She'd left all the doors wide open and hundreds of white cats from all over the neighborhood had come into the house. I was running from room to room searching like crazy for Connor (our white cat) amongst them.

The second dream was more disturbing and left me feeling angry, sad and confused. I was walking along the street and passed a white cat that looked remarkably like Connor. As I did so this woman struck a match and set light to his fur. I was desperately trying to put out the flames without hurting him but his fur went up so fast that he was down to burnt skin in seconds. I woke up feeling nauseated by the cruelty.

In the third dream I was investigating a flood in our basement when a man appeared with a somber look on his face. He told me that Connor had died suddenly of a heart attack at which point I woke up in a cold sweat.

I have to wonder what it all means.

Splash Of Color

The ground was soft underfoot. In the distance I heard the caaaawing of a bird and an airplane pass overhead. A faint breeze moved through the naked branches gently rustling the few remaining leaves. The sun warmed my face as I squinted my eyes and averted my gaze from it's direct rays. Placing one foot in front of the other I became conscious that I was searching, but searching for what?

And then I saw it. A smile drew across my face and I said a silent thank you. There is was like a small gift just for me. A splash of color in a sea of monochrome . . . and my favorite color too.

Adapting To Change

Being drawn to nature and wildlife, Winter is one of the hardest seasons for me photographically speaking. It's easy for me to be inspired during Spring when new life is beginning, during the Summer months when everything is lush and green and insects and wildlife are plentiful and during my all time favorite season of the year, Fall.

Winter, on the other hand, with it's palette of greys and browns leaves me feeling a little lack luster and uninspired.

Then I realized that as each season changes I need to adapt, just like I change a lens or the aperature on my camera I need to change my attitude. It may not be my favorite season. It may not be as easy to find things to photograph. I may not want to venture outside as often as usual but there is still beauty to be found through a camera lens if I take the time to look.

Four Legged Friends

While the birds have been out in force it seems as though it's been quite a while since I've seen my four legged friends. Luckily I spotted these two siblings as they were munching their way through our front yard this afternoon.

This ones coat looked a little ratty but seemed to be doing ok.

I loved this bashful looking pose.

When you've got an itch, what can you do but scratch!

These two seem inseparable, they are always together. I love the friendship and companionship that they seem to have.

I think they like to add a bit of protein to their diet by munching on fleas and ticks.

This guy took time out from eating to check me out . . . . .

. . . . . but I guess they were more interested in the grass than me and my camera.

Every year I get a little jealous of those who are able to come up with a creative list of resolutions. Other than the fact that I hate lists my mind typically goes blank and I honestly can't seem to think of a single worthwhile thing to write down.

This year Alyson Stanfield of ArtBizBlog made my life so much easier by creating 12 Artist Resolutions that she openly invites people to steal.

Brrrrr - It's A Cold One Today

I'm not quite sure what's going on with Winter this year but it feels really strange. It's 28F right now and is supposed to get down to 18F tonight but come Saturday we're supposed to see temps closer to 60F.

Still the birds don't seem to mind too much. They've been enjoying the suet we recently put out for them . . . . .

. . . . . while the finches love their thistle.

The new squirrel proof bird feeders we bought seem to be working . . . . .

. . . . . although the birds are such messy eaters and throw so much seed on the ground that the squirrels don't get left out.

It makes for happy happy critters all round.

Sometimes we find teachers in the most unexpected places. Who surprised you as a teacher this year and what did you learn?

I most definitely found a teacher in the unlikeliest of places this year . . . . . within me!

I would visit my favorite blogs and marvel at the images I saw there. I knew I wanted to improve the quality of my own photos and it was these daily visits that eventually inspired me to get off my butt and try to do something about it.

Early in the year I treated myself to a new camera and then taught myself how to use it by reading the manual for the first time ever! I read about Aperture/F-Stop Numbers and finally figured out what they meant. It was a little scary at first but I took my camera off the auto setting, experimented with different settings and haven't looked back since. Then I bought a macro lens and fell in love with a whole new world that opened up before my very eyes.

I still have a long way to go with my photography skills but I'm amazed at what I learnt this year and how much I improved . . . . . all by being inspired and having the desire and the passion to try and figure things out.

What are 12 things your life doesn’t need in 2012? How will you go about eliminating them? How will getting rid of these 12 things change your life?

1. Bugs

I almost had a heart attack when I moved from the UK to the US and saw the size of the bugs out here. There are times when it feels like I'm living in the Land Of The Giants! I thought they were bad in Connecticut but they are even worse here in Virginia. I react really badly to mosquito and spider bites so at the very least I'd love to eliminate those two.

2. Humidity

The humidity here in Virginia can be brutal during the summer months which makes it impossible to enjoy being outside during that time. Unfortunately I can't control mother nature.

3. Static

During the colder, dryer months I'm like a static magnet and find myself getting shocked over and over again. It's extremely painful and it doesn't help that most shop doors have metal handles! If anyone knows of any good static tips (other than static guard) I'm all ears.

4. Clutter

Some people have this ability to clear out the clutter and live in such a tidy organized space. I'm not one of them! There are times when I feel bogged down by all the stuff that I've accumulated over the years and even though I do a mini purge every once in a while I feel I need to be more ruthless in clearing out the clutter.

5. Negativity

I've said many times that I'm a glass is half empty type of person. Most of the time I see that as being realistic but it does err on the sign of being negative. I need to adopt my husbands more positive approach to things.

6. Self Criticism

All to often we are our own worst critics. I need to find a way to silence that inner voice when it's overly critical and not constructive.

7. Housework

Oh how I would love to eliminate housework. That's not going to happen any time soon but there are things I could do to help cut down on the amount of work I create for myself. Like hanging some laundry straight from the dryer to avoid having to iron it rather than letting it sit there forever getting all wrinkled.

8. Candy

Now I'm not saying that I'm going to give up all candy altogether but I am making a concerted effort to reduce the amount I eat which can only be good in the long run. Quite how long this good intention will last though . . . . that is the question.

9. Cold Calls

We receive an insane amount of cold calls and random calls from debt collectors chasing people we've never even heard one. I have to giggle each time a debt collector calls for Jesus and pronounces the name in the biblical sense.

10. Inertia

Illness has had me flat on my back this year which has left me feeling weak and unfit. I've really missed my nature walks so my plan is to get back outside, camera in hand, and try and build my strength and stammina back up.

11. Pain

Most of you will know that I've been suffering with some pretty excruciating nerve pain the past seven months. My body doesn't seem to respond well to medication but through a process of elimination I'm hoping that we've found some meds to help alleviate the pain.

12. Doctors Offices

Over the last year I've been inside more doctor and specialist offices than I care to remember (why is it that they are usually decorated so badly)? I'm hoping to eliminate these visits by getting better this coming year.

Exploring photography this year really opened my eyes. As I searched for images through my camera lens I found myself noticing and seeing the beauty in things that I would have overlooked before.

Most of you know that nature and willdlife are a huge source of inspiration for me so it's probably no surprise that a particular moment of beauty that stands out in my mind this year was my visit to Yellowstone. I was blown away by the diversity of the wildlife and the surroundings. It was nothing short of breathtaking and the photos really don't do it justice.

What was the one disappointment that has turned out to be a blessing in the last 12 months? How will this affect how you deal with disappointment in the future?

I'd been anxiously watching the weather forecast all week, it was looking good . . . . cold but dry.

Then Saturday morning came and as my husband and I headed off to attend an outdoor Art Show, the rain started and my heart sank.

We were cold, we were wet and it was looking like it was going to be a non event. Pretty disappointing considering all the preparation we'd put into getting there.

As it turns out the folks of Alexandria didn't let a bit of rain dampen their spirits and while the show may not have seen the number of attendees that it normally does it ended up being the best show that we've done so far!

It just goes to show that for a girl who usually views the glass as 'half empty' things aren't always as bad as they seem.

Tell me about your disappointments that turned out to be blessings in disguise.

Animals and insects have this uncanny ability to make me laugh, especially with some of the poses that they strike. I love that this prompt encouraged me to look back through my old photos and have a good giggle all over again . . . . .

Praying mantis usually scare me but I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this guy doing what can only be described as some kind of irish jig!

Then there was this Elk expressing her feelings on motherhood . . . . .

. . . but the ones who continue to make me laugh day in and day out are my two boys!

Mmmmmm guilty pleasures . . . . we all have them.

One of my biggest guilty pleasures is being fortunate enough to work from home and having the freedom to create whenever the mood strikes. I have the most amazing husband who continues to make this dream a possibility.

Other guilty pleasures include copious amounts of candy and the numerous pieces of camera equipment that I splurged on this year.

Two of my all time favorites though would have to be eating dessert for breakfast (what can I tell you I have a sweet tooth) and midday bubble baths {sigh}.

What have you let go of this year and how has it affected you?

This year has been great in terms of artwork sales. I've seen many of my favorite pieces head out of the door but feel as though I have gained so much in the 'letting go'.

There are certain pieces I've created that I feel a strong bond with in some way. It might be because of the amount of time I spent working on a piece, it might be an emotional connection, it might be the color combination or the subject matter.

Seeing people have an instant reaction to something that I've created . . . knowing that they love the piece as much I do . . . that it will find a spot in their homes and give them many hours of pleasure, fills me up in ways I struggle to put words to and inspires me to continue creating.

There used to be lots of turkeys that would stroll through our yard when we lived in Connecticut but we typically don't see that many here in Virginia.

That's why I was surprised when I spied this little guy and a few of his mates making a beeline for the woods the other day.

It would seem that they avoided the Thanksgiving dinner table this year!

Our trip to Yellowstone was a phenomenal experience, from the breathtaking scenery to the most incredible wildlife. There was, however, one particular moment that stood out from the rest.

We'd left our cabin early one morning when barely a mile up the road a large shape caught our attention . . . . .

. . . . . a MOOSE! I could hardly contain my excitement, especially as they are one of my favorite animals. I'd always wanted to see one and now here one was right in front of me.

Magical, magnificent and majestic doesn't even begin to describe these animals.

A truly memorable moment. It felt like an incredible priviledge and one that I will most certainly never forget.

Encapsulate the year 2011 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2012 for you?

If I had to sum up the past twelve months in just one word it would be 'CHALLENGING'. Let me explain . . . .

I started off the year feeling generally unwell. I saw doctors and specialists but wasn't really making much headway. Span to June and things suddenly got a whole lot worse. I found myself in excruciating pain with no relief.

I've been treated for migraines, sinus infections, toothache, ear, nose and throat problems but nothing checked out. I've also had MRI's, CT Scans, I-CAT Scans, X-Rays, Blood Tests, Sinus Surgery and been on so many different drugs it's enough to make your head spin.

After months and months of unsuccessful treatments it turns out that I have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia (a rare form of facial nerve pain that is often misdiagnosed). It seems that there is no clear cut treatment and tends to be a case of trial and error.

To give you some idea of the pain it's like having a migraine, toothache, earache, sinus pressure, cheek pain and neck pain all at the same time, every day.

If you'd asked me last year what my word for 2012 would have been I'd have probably picked something creative but today . . . . in the here and now, I would have to choose 'Healthy'.

What one word would you chose to describe your year and what word would you chose for 2012?

It was raining cats and dogs yesterday, the perfect day for chilling out in the studio and painting.

Of course no piece is complete without some finger painting too.

Painting was followed by a lazy afternoon where I slept and read while snuggled up under my favorite blanket. Just what I needed.

In The Studio This Week

I've been busy working on some Christmas presents this week. My husband and I will be spending Christmas in Kasas this year and this painting will be a gift for his family.

I've also been busy knitting a couple of childrens scarves. It's been a while since I picked up the knitting needles and I forgot how fun this yarn is to work with.

While I've been busy creating the cats have been fixated on the birds and squirrels that visit the feeders on our deck. They are a great source of entertainment (both the cats and the critters).

Winter Walk

I went for a beautiful walk along the C&O Canal last Friday.

It was freezing cold even though the sun was shining.

Other than a couple of runners and a cyclist I had the place all to myself.

With each step I found myself getting lost futher and further into my own thoughts.

Next thing I knew I was back at the car feeling tired but refreshed.

I don't think I resolved any of the things spinning around in my head but it felt good to let them free fall for a while.

A Day At The Zoo

A lot of my artwork is on consigment at a local store called 'EarthWorks'. I love working with the owners (Penni and Dewey), they make the whole experience so easy and fun. The piece you see below is something I've been creating for display in their store.

I also created this new 14"x11" mixed media canvas. I love how the tree came out and I was trying to work with different colors hence the purple background.

I also finished the horse canvas I was working on . . . . .

Glass Half Empty?

I was recently reminded that how we see things is often about perspective. I should mention that I'm typically a 'glass is half empty' kind of girl so when I was trudging through the dried leaves the other day I was more than a little depressed to think that my favorite season was coming to a close.

Then for some unknown reason my eyes were drawn upwards and were greeted with the most most amazing colors. The lower leaves may have fallen to the ground but there was still breath taking fall foliage to see with just a small shift in outlook.

It won't be long before all the leaves have fallen to the ground but for now I'll embrace Fall's parting gift.

Nuthatch were regular visitors to the bird feeders this weekend.

They are easily recognized by the black stripe on their head and their long pointed bill.

I love how they walk along tree trunks upside down, seemingly defying gravity, although one look at their strong toes and long claws shows that they are well equipped.

I like to think that they enjoy switching things up and seeing their world from different angles, just image what our world would like like if we spent a day walking around upside down. Kind of reminds me of 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl. If you've never read that book you really should.

Runes

I've never had a tarot reading (if I'm honest the thought of one scares me) but over the years I've found myself drawn time and time again to my book of runes.

Described as an Oracle that you can seek advice from, Runes work best if you ask a specific question of them. They provide a means of communicating with the subconscious mind, often pointing towards our hidden fears and motivations. Unlike fortune telling they are not intended to give instruction for what to do next but as a way for us to recognize those hidden fears and emotions and draw attention to the choices we make. That said, the future is not fixed and we can always choose to change the path we find ourselves on.

Works In Progress

I thought I'd share some of my 'works in progress' with you this week. No matter how hard I try I can never work on just one thing at a time. I often wish I had a larger table to paint on but thinking about it I realized that it would only lead to more choas!

'Raven' paintings seem popular so I decided to create a new one (in different colors). The 'Love' letters you see below are for me. I applied several layers of paint and they are now down in the basement where they've been sprayed with a clear sealant. I'm hoping to prop them up above one of the windows in my studio (aka our sunroom).

The 'Horse' canvas above and the 'Can't See The Woods For The Trees' canvas pictured below are gradually coming together and I hope to share some photos of the final pieces with you soon.

Winter Wonderland In October!

Those of you who visited my blog on Friday will have seen pictures from a 'rain soaked' walk I did on a trail that surrounds our home. Less than 48 hours later I was surprised to find the rain replaced with big chunks of heavy wet snow.

We usually don't see snow until December/January so for it to come down while there's still fall foliage on the trees is unheard of!

There's something magical about being the first to make tracks in it. Everything so crisp and clean, covered in a pristine white blanket.

It snowed all day Saturday and we ended up with 3-4" by the time it got done.

Mother Nature has been doing some crazy things the past few years, have to wonder what the next few will bring.

If You Go Down To The Woods Today

I don't usually go out in the rain but yesterday afternoon the short woodland trail that surrounds our home was calling my name. I couldn't resist, so I grabbed my camera and an umbrella and headed outside.

The ground was soft underfoot and the leaves that once rustled with each step were now soden and clung to the ground flat and lifeless.

The rain creating a rhythmic pitter patter as it hit the trees.

I love the richness of color that comes with rainfall, how the bark on the trees darken and all the colors become more saturated.

I also love how some of the leaves had been caught mid flight. It made me think of my husband and how supportive he's been, how he's always there to catch me when I feel myself falling.

Just several minutes later muddy boots were discarded at the back door and I was warm and dry inside again with a few new photos to add to my collection.

Writing Mojo

Reading through some old posts I realized that I used to write a lot more and I have to confess I miss it. The clicking of the computer keys, watching the words form as I type. Now each time I sit down to write I find myself staring at a blank screen, the blinking cursor mocking me, taunting me as I search for words that fail to come.

I wonder why this is. Is it because I've been ill? Is it because I'm lacking inspiration? Is it because I've been concentrating on my photography? Is it because I have nothing to say? I know many of you have found yourselves faced with 'writers block' at one time or another. How did you push past it?

If you happen to find my writing mojo, please tell it I miss it and want it to come home.

Blue Ridge Mountains

This weekend was tough . . . . I had some pretty severe migraines with a lot of facial nerve pain so with Sunday being my birthday I was feeling pretty blue.

Thankfully my husband came to my rescue. He bundled me up into his truck and drove us along the Blue Ridge Mountains so that we could see the fall foliage.

It was a little hazy but the fall colors were just gorgeous. Natures own palette, got to love that.

When we stood under this canopy of trees it was nothing short of magical.

Regular Visitors

I love that we live in the country and and that our home is surrounded by trees. The deer seem to love it too and are daily visitors. Yesterday I spied two of them munching their way around our yard so I snuck outside with my camera. I obviously need to work on my 'stealth mode' because this one spied me right away.

They have a really good sense of smell and I think the wind was blowing my scent in their direction.

I must have smelt good because the sniffing was soon followed by a lot of lip licking (try saying that several times fast)!

They also have great hearing. With ears like that it's no wonder.

Eventually its sibling came into view and after some additional grass munching . . . . .

. . . . . they took off into the neighbors yard.

It would seem that most of our feathered friends have desserted us . . . . . all except one, the black capped chickadee.

I love how unfraid they appear to be, they don't seem to mind me sitting close by, observing them.

I watch as they come in for landing . . . . .

Praying Mantis

We had a visitor recently . . . . .

. . . . one with spiked raptorial forelegs!

If I didn't know better I'd have thought it was Irish. The way it kept moving its leg made it seem like it was doing its own rendition of 'Riverdance'.

There's something about a Praying Mantis that fascinates me, yet creeps me out at the same time. I think its the way their eyes lock onto you, like they're considering whether you're they're next meal.

Woodland Walk

It's been a long time since I've been able to venture out so it felt amazing to take a leisurely woodland stroll earlier this week.

I hadn't realized just how much I'd missed being out in nature.

So many new sights, sounds and smells to absorb.

I love seeing all the different mushrooms and the richness of color at this time of year.

It feels as though Fall is slipping through my fingers. I hope that I get to enjoy more walks like this before Winter sets in.

Weekend Reflections

This subject matter is a departure for me as I'm usually all about nature and wildlife. This photo was taken from a moving vehicle of a store front in downtown Leesburg, VA (I should probably mention that my husband was driving at the time not me)!

It was early evening and I was drawn to the diagonal shadows created by the telephone poles as well as the reflections in the mirror.

Searching For Light At The End Of The Tunnel

I saw an neurologist earlier this week and have now been diagnosed with Atypical Neuralgia (a type of facial nerve pain).

This is often difficult to diagnose (commonly mistaken for other disorders) and it's not always clear what has caused it in the first place. It's also difficult to treat and tends to be a case of trial and error with drugs and dosage to see what works.

The doctor was amazed that I'd been experiencing acute pain for four months and I'm now on a new concoction of medicines to see if we can get the pain under control.

It feels like a long and arduous journey that I'm on but I'm hoping that there's light at the end of this tunnel.

Art On The Avenue

Bryan and I headed off to the Art Festival on Saturday morning. Our hearts sank when we saw that the weather was bad and had to set up in the rain and the cold. One of the organizers told us that the show has been going for 16 years and this was the first time the weather has been this awful.

The morning was looking really bleak, with people rushing by, but come lunchtime the rain stopped and people and sales finally started to come in. The most popular items were definitely the art paintings and journals and I was so happy that some of the larger artwork sold.

Despite the rain and the cold it ended up being one of the best shows we'd done and a show that we'd love to do again next year.

Keeping It Real

Some of you know I've been experiencing pain these past several months and that after numerous doctor/specialist visits I finally underwent surgery on my nose and sinuses. The doctor had hoped that it would relieve my pain although she was up front and said there was a chance the pain might be nerve related.

It has been five weeks since my surgery and I was trying to remain hopeful but over the last four days the pain has been increasing in intensity. I managed to get an emergency appointment with my doctor yesterday and, given that my nose and sinuses check out ok, it would seem that I might have some form of atypical neuralgia (nerve damage/pain).

The next leg of this journey will involve a visit to a neurologist . . . my search for answers and pain relief continues.

Dad should have turned 71 today. He's been gone over 8 years now but he's always on my mind. His death changed me in so many ways and strangely it ended up being the catalyst for my creativity. I'd never been artistic growing up but I suddenly found myself drawn to it . . . . needing it. They say art has the power to heal and I truly believe that it does.

Human Barometer

People usually laugh when I say I'm like a human barometer but it's true. Each time a storm rolls through and the air pressure increases I end up with a migraine. I seem to be getting a lot of them lately and spent the weekend suffering with not one but two.

More thunderstorms are predicted this week but I'm hoping that they pass through quickly, that my head lifts and that I start feeling a little more human soon.

North Carolina - Part III

As we drove through 'Duck' one day I noticed all these birds perched on a pier. The Royal Terns look a little funny but are striking with their black caps and bright orange beaks.

We experienced gorgeous weather for most of our stay but on our last day some dark ominous clouds settled in and the wind really picked up.

It didn't stop us from taking several walks on the beach though.

On our last walk I came across what felt like the shore's parting gift to me . . . . a pelican right there on the sand in front of me.

He didn't seem frightened by my presence . . . . .

. . . . . and was happy just hanging out at the waters edge.

Isn't he gorgeous?

I just couldn't believe how close he let me get, making eye contact with an animal is always such a magical and special moment.

North Carolina - Part II

When I'm walking with my camera I often find myself focusing on what's right in front of me . . . . .

North Carolina - Part I

Bryan and I had a great week in North Carolina. One of the first things we did when we arrived was to head straight to the beach. There's nothing quite like the feeling of sand beneath your feet and salt water swirling around your toes.

As we walked along the beach, inhaling the sea air, I could feel the stress and tension slipping away. There's something hypnotic, relaxing and rhythmic about the lapping of the waves.

No trip to the beach would be complete without a seagull or two. The guy below was pretty vocal, there was an awful lot of squawking going on.!

They love their food too and have to be prepared to put up a good fight when they find a tasty morsel to snack on.

When they're not eating, or strutting along the beach, a little grooming is called for.

They also share the beach with tons of these guys. If I'm honest crabs freak me out. I hate the way they seem to scurry the moment you sit still only to dart back down their holes at the first sign of movement.

One of my favorites though have to be sanderlings. Much like hummingbirds, there's just something about them that always makes me smile.

While I was expecting to see seabirds I was a little surprised to see this guy on the beach. I think it's a Grackle.

My husband and I got into a wonderful routine during our vacation . . . . reading, sitting out by the pool in the morning and then heading to the beach in the afternoon. He would fish while I spent my time photographing the birds, bliss.

On a couple of mornings I was up early enough to have the beach all to myself. There's something magical when it's just you, the ocean and a sunrise. I've never shot a sunrise or sunset before so had absolutely no idea what I was doing. If anyone has any great tips I'd love to hear them.

I'll be back tomorrow with some more photos from our trip. So tell me, how was your week?

North Carolina & Weekend Reflections

I'm so excited to be heading down to North Carolina tomorrow for a week long vacation with my husband. I plan to unplug while I'm there but don't worry I'll be back to bore you all with lots of photos in a weeks' time.

Sleepless in Virginia

I found myself wide awake at 2.30 am this morning and try as I might I was unable to hold onto the tendrils of sleep. It happens sometimes, I'm no stranger to sleepless nights.

There's something so peaceful about the early hours of the morning . . . . . curled up with a mug of tea while it's still dark outside. The house quiet and at rest.

I will be seeing the doctor late this afternoon for another checkup. I seem to have good days and bad days pain wise but my nose appears to be healing. It's still to early to tell whether the surgery fixed the problem, or whether the pain I've been experiencing is nerve related, but I'm keeping everything crossed that when all the swelling has died down that it goes away.

My husband and I will be heading off to the Outer Banks this weekend for our long awaited vacation. I'm hoping that the sea air is restorative and healing, even if it is supposed to rain while we're there. Can't wait.

Falling Into You

The summer in North Virginia was brutal this year with its unusually high temps, high humidity and high pollen counts. I've been waiting desperately for Fall to make an appearance and it would seem that it's finally here.

It's been raining non-stop the last few days and it looks like we're set to have more rain throughout the week. It feels refreshingly good after the hazy dusty days that we've been used to.

Fall is my favorite time of year and I'm standing here with arms outstretched ready to embrace it and hold it tight. How are things looking in your neck of the woods?

Weekend Reflections - Take A Walk With Me

Yesterday evening I had this urge to get in the car and drive to one of my favorite local spots. I'm more of a morning person so it was unusual for me to head out so late in the day.

The sun was low in the sky casting a yellow glow over the water.

I sat there for an hour just soaking in my surroundings seeing how light plays on different surfaces.

I'm not used to photographing in this kind of light so I think I need some practice with my camera settings.

On the way back to the car I noticed something glinting in the sunlight.

This poor little guy had got one of his wings caught in a spiders web.

I battled with whether to let nature take it's course and leave the little guy hanging there but I just couldn't do it, I had to set him free. I swear he smiled at me as he flew away.

Just a few steps further along I came across this fuzzy creature (anyone know what kind of spider it is)? I had to wonder whether the damselfly I rescued might have been his next meal!

Back at my car I noticed this reflection in a side window. I loved how the way the tree is distorted gives it an almost tropical feel.

Then on the road home I was greeted with the sight of these deer.

It doesn't get much better than this!

Hummingbirds

Movement outside our sunroom window grabs my attention and a big smile draws across my face . . . . . .

. . . . . there's something about seeing hummingbirds that make me happy.

There are a couple of females that feed frequently and don't seem to mind having their photo taken but the males are a little more camera shy.

They're so tiny and fragile yet beautiful and fascinating.

We have so many deers visiting our yard right now it's crazy, definitely a lot more than last year.

Even though they eat everything in sight all is forgiven when I see the bambi's, they are just so darn cute.

While they graze, a protective mother keeps an eye on me.

It looks as though she had something to say!

The Pulse Of Mixed Media by Seth Apter

At the end of 2010 Seth Apter of The Altered Page set some pretty incredible wheels in motion when he put out a call inviting entries for a mixed media art book that he was working to have published.

Little did I know that by taking a chance and sending Seth my entry that I would be fortunate enough to be included in such an amazing project.

For those of you unfamiliar with Seth's work, his aim has been to "take the pulse" of the online mixed media artist community through a series of projects that include both questions and answers as well as the presentation of artwork created specifically for the book. While the book will include practical, art-related information, it will primarily focus on more personal and provocative issues. His end goal is to provide readers with a window into the creative hearts and minds of the participants and offer a snapshot of the state of our community today.

The image you see here is a sneak peek of the front cover of his book titled 'The Pulse of Mixed Media' which is set to be released by North Light Books in March 2012. There will be additional details coming soon but in the meantime simply sign up to Seth's mailing list and be among the first to receive exciting news on his upcoming events and book updates.

A Big Thank You For Your Love & Support

I have to say I'm looking much like this butterfly at the moment, definitely battered and bruised and a little worse for wear.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to each of you who stopped by this past week to wish me well and check up on me post surgery.

The surgery ended up being pretty rough. It was more involved than they first thought. I had to have a deviated septum straightened, a bone spure removed, additional bone trimmed, my left sinus cavity opened up and also the top sinus cavity enlarged that goes up past your eye (which they'd hoped they wouldn't have to do).

I was in a lot of pain following the procedure and spent close to 4 hours in the initial recovery room before being taken through to see my husband. After having the lower packs removed from my nose on Tuesday, I then spent Wednesday in excruciating pain from the pressure of all the packing that remains at the top of my nose.

I will be going to have the remainder of stuff removed tomorow but fear that I will be out of action for several more days yet. I just couldn't let the week go by without saying thank you and how all your comments have meant so much to me.

Just A Little Scared . . . . .

Those of you who are regular follows of my blog will know that I have been suffering with acute sinus pain for close to eight weeks now. After my ENT Specialist failed to come up with any answers I was finally referred to an incredible doctor at Georgetown University Hospital.

This Monday I will be having surgery to trim a bone spur in my nose, fix my deviated septum and open up my left maxillary sinus which we are hoping will alleviate the pain (please keep everything crossed).

To say that I'm petrified of hospitals, needles and procedures would be an understatement but at this point I would do just about anything to make the pain go away.

I just wanted to let you know that I may be absent for several days while I recover.
