navel gazing turns distant
sinking inwards
unearthing wormholes existence
while wonder
swirling featherless
mines the obscure
and I'm left wondering
if dark matter matters
if my world is whirling
or if it's me that's swirling
motionless
in the whirlpool of life
trapped circling the absence
of everything and nothing

ooh, i love this one... kind of the way i am feeling these days. great word play and the tension of the contradictions is perfect!
ReplyDeleteThis feeling of being trapped in darkness sounds uncomfortably familiar.
ReplyDeleteWish it wasn't so.
Deletetrapped. oh man, oh man, oh man just wonderful and true.
ReplyDeleteFavorite....love, love the image and the words - sheesh - I relate!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim, been thinking of you and your son. Hope he's doing ok.
Deletedark matter is what holds us all together..it makes up a huge portion of space...i wonder at the theory that it is remnants of creation...or the big bang...is it the world moving...or us...that is a good question...
ReplyDeleteI guess its all about perspective . . .
Deletesome interesting questions here... the big mysteries of life and where are we in all this...
ReplyDeletethat's what happens when you contemplate your navel :)
DeleteIt must be a difficult situation to be in when you don't know if its you or the world swirling ~
ReplyDeleteNow that I read your comments about the navel, I am smiling now :-)
And that imagery is just stunning Kathryn ~
Thanks Grace :)
DeleteI understand the feeling! What a cool image, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you. :)
Deleteonly been contemplating naval oranges of late. and lint. and that's about the extent of my creative leanings. you make art, too, though - doubly creative - i just resort to sarcasm (as an art form). hmm. maybe that's where my 15 year old gets it... ~
ReplyDeleteFunny . . . I've been contemplating navel oranges too. :) Sarcasm is a great art form, Brits are known for it. I actually miss it now that I live in the US because most people don't get it and take you too literally.
DeleteLove this Kathryn. Great questions and navel gazing is good... occasionally.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debi, yes a bit of navel gazing now and then is definitely called for.
DeleteMeditation will do that to you! Going inward often reveals truths beyond the self. Nicely put together.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim.
DeleteBeautifully written and definitely got a sense of confusion from the structure of this poem and the word choice. Searching inside ourselves often brings out a lot of confused ideas.
ReplyDeleteconfusion should be my middle name . . .
DeleteYour extrapolation of navel gazing makes for unexpected poetry.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kerry . . . never know where my mind is going to go next.
DeleteYour poem echoes my own thoughts of late, though much more beautifully and coherently worded of course... love it...
ReplyDeleteVery visual poem, Kathryn--and all the more effective--this time of year often has that effect on me, too.
ReplyDeleteI love writers who are fearless about writing. Your line about dark matter mattering was exquisite to read. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
a beautiful paradox.
ReplyDeleteWell written.Beautiful.
