Shoot From The Hip

Call me crazy but one of the things I love to do is hold my camera at hip height and randomly shoot images while I'm walking.

You can end up with a bunch of rubbish shots but I love the surprise of not knowing what you're going to get until you download your photos.

Sometimes I get so focused on taking photos that I forget to look past the camera lens and appreciate what is around me.

This just changes things up a little bit and even though people may look at you a little strange it's fun.

It also meant that I could spent time with my husband and dogs rather than them constantly waiting for me to catch up.

Do you ever do this?

  7. I do this sometimes too, although more often as street photography when other people are around. Trying not to be too obvious. Often the results are fairly average :)

    1. I always feel very conscious on streets so I tend to save the photography for nature. I should try and break out of the box though and give it a go.

    1. Thanks . . . there are times when I want to lay down and take some shots but I figure people would think I'm strange.

  9. Kathryn, thanks for these "from the hip" shots. Clever premise, and I'm glad to see a photographer who posts the less-than-perfect shots, because they have a zen all their own.

And, speaking as a married woman, allow me to say, your husband is HOT! Yeah, the dogs are cute, too. Wink... Amy

    1. Thanks, it's a fun approach just to literally shake off the singular view that often comes with camera in hand. My husband was made up with yours and Nancy's comments, you guys made his day. ;0)

  10. I never have, but will have to give it a try! (Love the expression on your husbands face - he looks as happy and eager to proceed as the dogs!)

    1. You linked up with The Garden "Open Link Monday" but it didn't go to a page. Is there a poem out there that didn't get posted?
