Photo Heart Connection: February

February was a tough month.  The weather drove me insane and I didn't have many opportunities to venture outside with the camera.  I did, however, sit on the sofa taking photos of my feathered friends.  I chose the image below for my photo heart connection this month because it's a reminder to appreciate the little things; from the beauty of nature, to food on the table, to capturing incredible moments that I'd miss with the naked eye.

I was so excited when I scrolled through my images and found that I'd captured a nuthatch in the process of swallowing a peanut (can you see it there in its throat)?

It reminded me of when I take my tablets, swallowing them whole, although I have to say I probably look more like a pelican as I do this head shake action (that my husband thinks is hysterical) to get the tablet to go down.

Sssh, don't tell them this but the nuthatch aren't my favorite birds.  There is something about their face that can make them look quite sinister at times.

I do love the way they hang upside down both on trees and the feeders though.

I wonder if all that blood going to their head makes them smarter?

In all the grey and brown of February it was hard to be upbeat and creative but Nature has a way of teaching us patience . . .  all things come to those who wait.

  1. Maybe it's because he looks like he has a mohawk! ;)

It almost looked like he was going to choke on that peanut, seriously, how on earth do they swallow those things? And I got a chuckle out of your comment about being smarter with all that blood going to their heads. So does this mean we are getting an extra special Spring? (we had a gorgeous weekend near 80 and I woke up to a temp of 20 with the wind chill - really?)

    1. Thanks Naomi, I can spend hours watching them. They've been loving the peanuts this winter and they seem to last longer than sunflower seeds. :0) Thanks for the header love too.

  5. This winter has been difficult - I have done my share of hibernating, rather than braving the cold temps and brutal winds to do much outdoor shooting. I not much of a bird person but I always enjoy the images you capture of your feathered friends.

    1. Brenda, I think a lot of people have been feeling it this winter. It feels exceptionally long. Can't wait for spring and getting back out there with camera in hand.

  6. Beautiful captures of the nuthatch! It has been a rather difficult winter for many. Thankfully we've only had several really cold days and no snow accumulation to amount to anything!

  10. Hello Kathryn! It has been a while since I've visited. Life has been very very busy. These photos are absolutely stunning!!! I love watching the birds. I have feeders out front and a large picture window in my studio, so I can watch them everyday. I had not thought of putting peanuts out - I must try that. The squirrels might get greedy, though, and deprive the dear birds.

  16. Yesterday the sun was out and it was in the 40s, I didn't have much free time available, but I just had to sneak out and sit in the sun for 20 minutes, just to feel it on my face. It felt like a little gift, one to help tide me over until spring actually arrives. Great photos!
