The Shadow Of Death

eyes
an ashen abyss
of sorrow and pain
prisms of souls
creating voluminous shadows
despite the light of day
for death brings its own darkness
an absence of all other colors
of sound too
unless we wake

  1. Death does indeed makes us think all other colors have disappeared. Dark but insightful poem!

    1. Thanks Gabriella . . . I keep trying to create something lighter in mood but somehow my poems keep coming out dark at the moment.

  4. And sometimes we wake and other times, perhaps not. Death has been on my mind lately--so your piece speaks to me

  9. Don't apologize for darkness. . . . A lot of people know of it and the rest fear it. In that regard we can all relate. Waking from death? That is a haunting thought.

    1. Thanks, took me a while to come up with an image. It actually contains a photo of my cats eye with a window reflected in it.

  11. Some things can only be observed in shadow. Necessary though dire. And sleep is more like death than we'll ever know. Good work.

  15. So true that death brings its own darkness -- an absence of color, the darkest of darkness indeed.

  16. The image does actually look like an eyeball...but surely, death brings light behind the darkness - just maybe on another wavelength?

    1. There is actually an eye in the image . . . it's a photo of my cats eye with a window reflected in it. I know what you mean about how there can be light too.

  17. To wake after the wake, to let the shadow of death pass ...can take quite a while.

  19. I like how you point out that darkness is an absence of colors, because that is what it is! Poetic, but still true as can be! Nicely written poem!

  21. Death as an absence of all other colors... never considered this angle. Worth pondering.

  22. This is brilliant. Extremely well crafted. Love how the sensory elements are slowly shuttered away, but you still leave a glimmer of something at the end... "unless we wake".
