Assassin

intercepted
between spiny legs

skin bristling at a touch
that offers no creature comfort

a mouth penetrates places
it should not go

 you'll hear no laughter
at the tickle of a moustache

for I'm paralyzed
m  e  l  t  i  n  g
from the inside out

until, until
I'm sucked
DEAD

The cycle of death can be hard to look at but it's all a part of Nature and I find myself fascinated by it.

    1. When I first saw them together it looked like they were embracing one another until I really saw what was going on.

  5. This reminds me of an incident in Annie Dillard's "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" and what happened to a frog as she watched. It is a picture that will never leave me. You captured the same horror here - very good.

    1. One of the things I love about living in the country is seeing Nature up close and personal. Perhaps a little too up close and personal for some I'm sure.

  7. Poignant words and fascinating images that enthrall. Both the poem and the photos keep the eyes and soul glue to them... terrible beauty comes to mind. Terribly sublime...

  8. O dear, Kathryn. I'd better read up on this!! But then I'm sort of like that when it is full moon and my fangs come out. I even have a mustache to go with my beard.
It is not so scary and much more sensuous if read without pictures of these creatures. :)

    1. When I first saw them it looked like they were embracing. I had no idea they would eat their own kind.

  10. What amazing photography! Is it a case of cannibalism? They look like the same species.
Great word choice makes your poem really graphic - in an insectivorous way.

    1. I've only ever seen one before this time so was surprised to see it eating one of its own. Apparently they do that although they are partial to any flying insect.
